I bought this book as a suppliment for an online anatomy course I''m taking. The book goes in detail through the structure of the whole body and has helped me a little with my things I don''t understand in the anatomy course. However, there are almost no sideview drawings of the body or parts of the body. This limits the usefulness of the book greatly! If I want to draw something that is not a 100% front plane or back plane this book is almost useless. Also, as a book for artist it would have been great to see some simplifications of body parts, e.g. joints drawn in simple forms. There are very few simplifications like that in the book and those that are in the book mostly deal with the body as a whole, not single functional parts of it. When trying to use the book I have consistently had to search the internet for better understanding of rawing human anatomy.

It feels more like a theoretical anatomy book than a book for artists.

If I could rate higher than five stars, I would!

Over the years, I''ve collected TONS of anatomy books in an attempt to improve my figure drawing skills. The figure is one of my absolute favorite things to draw. As I''m working on écorché for an anatomy class I''m taking, so I finally pulled this book off the shelf (I''ve had it since January, 2016). As I worked through the bones and muscles in the section on the torso, I had to pause and get up to write this review because there is no doubt. This is THE best book on anatomy that I''ve ever studied. And of all the books that I have on my shelf (more than two rows on a large shelf)! I''ve always wondered what happens to this bone or that bone and this muscle or that muscle when the person is in a position other than standing with weight distributed on both feet. I haven''t gone through all sections, but in the torso section, the author illustrated movement showing the bones and/or muscles and how they act in that movement. I''ve attached a couple of pictures, one of the clavicle and its movement and the other of the muscles of the scapula and how they react.

If anyone else is like me and wondered these things, this book is a must-have for figure drawing enthusiasts! With that said, it''s not for the beginner. It focuses more on how bones/muscles work together and what''s going on under the skin than it does on actual drawing assignments like many of the other books that I have. They served their purpose. This book builds on the skills acquired from the how-to-draw books and/or classes. However, if you purchased it and you''re a beginner, and you feel it''s not a good purchase for you, for whatever reason, I''d suggest that you keep it, if you plan to continue studying the figure because one day soon, this book will be a precious gem in your collection. If you are seasoned but looking for "something more", this book is definitely a great buy.

So much details about the human anatomy. I’m using this currently for school but I use this often with my drawings and character building. I recommend this for anyone who is wanting to get better with drawing but also stay knowledgeable about the human body.

So, the review is this: I cry (well, no literally :)) of hapiness when i study and practice from this book since is just how a book on this topic should be. It contains all the information one might need, and a lot more so you can end up with a very solid and well rounded knowledge about anatomy.
This book is A MUST. If you are wondering about it...stop and buy this and have it for ever with you, you won''t regreat it, i bet you 100 bucks ;)
thanks to the author for this, and for a price that is a joke, this book worth the money and more.

I bought this in order to work on my figurative drawing. My art teacher had suggested an anatomy book for artists and I went through your selection and decided on this one as it looked thorough and straightforward without gimmicks, and was reasonably priced. It is a very detailed book. The drawings are exactly what was required, showing bones and muscles in good clear line drawings. The text is also well written and informative. Anatomy which used to be a required subject for artists has been gradually phased away, but for figurative work it is useful, and used to be considered vital, to understand the underlying structure of the body, whether drawing it in movement or as a portrait. My only criticism is that the author has not considered to include diagrams of the human infant and child showing the typical proportions etc at various stages ands ages: that would have been most helpful. However, I don''t think I''ve seen this anywhere in an artists anatomy book, only specialist books on drawing children.

I''ve had this book for years now, and still love it. So many anatomy books I''ve encountered over the years (and there''s been many - I''m a former art student) are just plain boring to look at, unappealing and filled with unclear language. This one is beautifully and clearly laid out, with really lovely drawings and great explanations. It''s a nice big book, too - that part at least is a personal thing, I think; I much prefer a large format for reference.
